WORDS BY by Martyna Glawocka

Biographical note of the authors
Born in 1982 at Szczecin (Poland). Graduated in 2007 in Cultural Studies at the University of Lodz, she specialized in film and media. She has directed three documentaries: ‘Our Place’ (2012), ‘Good Work’ (2013) and ‘Words by’ (2013).

 Synopsis
‘Words by’ is a film that describes a routine day in Tim’s life presented in his Library-Archive. The author follows some readers along the shelves of the library while they are choosing their books, with the aim of looking through their souls on the basis of their criteria of book selections.

JudgementThis film is valuable for the originality of its subject and for the brilliance of the representation of not just a mere place of goods exchange, but rather of a place of human relations exchange. Work is fully rendered as something more precious than a pure form of subsistence for the worker; it becomes moreover a tool for his social enrichment, a tool which facilitates the encounter between the “individual” and the “other”. Human capital is therefore the essential concept underlying the idea of work.

BONVINI, INSCI’ E COMPAGNIA BELA by Matteo Mattana

Biographical note of the author

He has been working for TV productions as video editor since he was 22. Throughout these years he has perfectioned techniques for video and direction while realizing his independent works.

Synopsis

‘Bonvini Inscì e compagnia bela’ (Bonvini Inscì and all the rest) is a short documentary depicting the story of a traditional bookstore and typography, founded in 1902. Luigi Cambieri was its last worker, in a span of time included between the years 1955 and 2011. His father-in-law is the founder of the shop. At the end of his career, he evokes the story of the shop and of his family. His way of describing the techniques of production recalls the ceremonies of a religious practise or of an art which is about to disappear.

Judgement

The main reason for the recognition of this prize depends on the capacity of representing the printer’s trade throughout its diachronic developments, highlighting the phases of its changes through the artisan’s words. The craftsman suggests the idea of a work in which the relation between the man and the machines is not limited to the utilitaristic use of the tools, but on the contrary it evolves into a sort of a spiritual unity of intents, an inextricable tangle of threads which is at the basis of his own life.

Synopsis

The documentary narrates the story of Jacopo and Nicola, two young Italian startuppers. Jacopo is the founder of Milkyway and deals with technological innovation applied to extreme sports: he has a family and has been able to hire 16 employees in a few months. Nicola is founder of Wpextreme, a web startup, and aims on reaching the Silicon Valley. Both entrepreneurs present their desires, the passion for their work, their fears and hopes for the future.

Judgement

This film deserves to be awarded due to the original traits of the subject, but its value is mainly due to the innovative viewpoint through which the loneliness and the interior hardships of the entrepreneurs emerge as some ineliminable components which lead to innovate in job processes. This behavioral and psychological traits represent two inescapable conditions for exerting the work of creative professional and of entrepreneurial innovator. This documentary film recurs to the techniques of journalism for favouring the emergence of these traits, also thanks to the wise use of images and music.

Synopsis

Coworking in progress is a reportage on coworking experiences. Although coworking represents an increasingly diffused form of work methodology, it is basically ignored by the media. Yet it represents a cultural and social revolutionary process, an alternative to traditional ways to the private initiative. The documentary shows how coworking has already become a consolidated form of work.

Judgement

The best reason for the recognition of the prize to this film is attributable to its capacity of showing a way of working which is innovative under a multiplicity of organizational standpoints, making use of a variety of sources in the narration and of a highly appreciable style in the editing process. Coworking, as the name itself suggests, is a way of conceiving work in which the core of the activity is assigned to the relations between people. This film is able to present this upcoming way of working with a global look both to its theoretical as well as to its practical aspects.

Social Theater Gualtieri “Cantiere Aperto”. Job common good

Second Prize

Social Theater Gualtieri “Cantiere Aperto”. Job common good by Alessandro Bonvini

Biographical note of the author
Graduated in Science of Communications, he has worked as copywriter for children’s literature. Since 2006 he has been working as video-maker at the University Center of E-learning at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Synopsis
The documentary narrates the stimulating story of the ‘Cantiere Aperto’, which represents a working experience characterized by an enlarged participation of people conducted under the auspices of the Social Theater of Gualtieri, in the province of Reggio Emilia, between September 2011 and May 2013. The documentary aims to present the work activity under a different perspective, a socially-involving work experience that highly impacts on the local territory, renovating the very original roots of cooperation.

JudgementThis film does not only represent a work experience, it more importantly shows a unique life experience and a challenge which contains a high cultural and social value. A plurality of artisanal forms of wisdom at the local level have been shared by the people involved into this adventure; in this case, the work experience project has gathered together tens of volunteers who were all moved by a common goal of a social, rather than an individual, scale.

SARDU SHEARING by Norma Colombero

Biographical note of the authors
She is author of films and documentaries. A version of her documentary on sheep-shearing and on the shearing traditions in Sardinia, co-directed with Piero Giordano, has been recently acquired by RAI radio-television.

Synopsis
Ignazio is a young Sardinian shearer, who has abandoned the traditional working techniques based on the use of pruning-shears and has migrated abroad to apprehend the use of modern tools and techniques. In the island he works together with foreign seasonal workers. Nowadays the sheep-shearers have formed an international community of skilled professionals who move from nation to nation, shearing thousands of sheeps recurring to modern methodologies. Their job is rich of satisfaction though it is highly impacting on their private lives.

Judgement
This film evokes the roots of one of the oldest trades in human work, a manual activity that, despite its millenary history, remains unfamiliar to the majority of people. Contrarily to the common sense, shearing requires skills and competences of a high profile so that it can be stated that this job is based on a top-level trait of professionalism. Sheep shearers form a community of individuals coming from different nations and disanchored from a specific state or place, individuals who are ready to move from a countryside to another countryside in order to exert their profession.

This work develops around an original subject rendered with a combination of good technique, irony and perspicacity in presenting intercultural comparisons. Teresina Barbiere

TERESINA BARBIERE
by Marta Zen

Curriculum of the author
Marta Zen has worked on several documentaries and short films as a video editor. She teaches multimedia and video editing techniques. Her first project as an author as well as a director has been the full-lenght film “Barbers”, which includes as a short story the work “Teresina Barbiere”.

Summary
Teresina is the only woman registered at the Chamber of Commerce as a “barber”. She has learned the job from her step-father and she has been able to emancipate by virtue of this job. The documentary follows the last year of her activity. Teresina is not willing to abandon her clients, but her accountant gave her indications on the necessity to interrupt the job. Teresina is an excellent barber.

Judgment
The main quality of this work is paid by the strength and the truthfulness of the character, together with the dynamism in the shooting and in the editing processes. Spectators can follow the protagonist while she works and speaks with her customers, so to clearly perceive the “colours” of her job. There is a big effort to present the ancient wisdom inherent to old professions and to compare it to the present mentality through the memories of a woman who describes her own experiences with the language typical of a straight story.
